some guy's blog reminded me of an old idea to have APs send out more info than normal. Just broadcast an XML document periodically with tons of meta-info like lat/long, public access allowed, etc.. You'd receive it by associating to the AP, then you'd get broadcast packets like normal, or go to monitor mode to listen for them.
