I've been to an organized beach party, laid out on the beach, saw lots and lots of beautiful girls (99% european), and become a regular at the Will Wait movie bar. I wasnt seeing as much as I wanted to and living there was a little spendy. So I thought about the west coast as darrin suggested and I thought about another inland small town since kanchaniburi was a lot of fun.
I left ko samui island yesterday. Said goodbye to Trent and Ramona. I got on a pickup which serves as the local bus/taxi system. I met a few californians who were on their way to another island. It was odd to think that they understood every word I say. Even sarcasm and other advanced forms of speech. The train was an all-night train up the penninsula. All the windows were down of course and people were not wearing shoes, looking at the scenery. there were still plenty of tourists on board. I made it into bangkok at 7am and caught the 7am train to Ayutaya. This train didnt have a foreigner on it. i saw lots of farmland and mostly shack housing. there were at least 4 vendors walking the isle of the train, saying they had "coke pepsi bia" (that last one is beer) for sale. Another person had a big plasic bucket filled with fried chicken. The chicked was stacked on top of each other, with a palm leaf of some sort to keep it from touching the bucket. remember, paper is never found here. plastic is everywhere. the guy sitting across from me bought a sausage roll thing, which came in a plastic bag and was handed to him by putting it into another plastic bag. when he was finished, he tossed the whole thing out the window of the train.
i got off at the ayutaya stop and asked anyone who looked like a traveler about a good guest house. the first guy only spoke german and the couple I asked were only there for the day. I picked a guest house from the lonely planet book and looked for a taxi. a tuktuk driver came up to me and I was willing to try it even though in bangkok they're scum. he pointed to a fixed, painted wooden sign that had all the prices for tuktuk rides to various places. fixed prices I thought cool, they cant scam you.
the city is surrounded by a moat and it used to be the old capitol is thailand before some king some time ago through it should be moved for some reason. the tuktuk driver wanted to take me to a new guest house, he even had a brochure with him, but it was 350 baht. i knew there were cheaper than that. I went to the first place and a western person was making a shake behind the bar. i asked about a room and could i see it. 'in a few minutes' he said. i thought he was rather rude. then an unhappy looking older thai person showed me upstairs to a nice looking room. she asked me where i was from. USA I said. then i got a suprize. 'me no like USA stay here. In guest book you write Canada. Many muslim here.' i thought im not going to write in some other country just to please this person. 'maybe i'll go somewhere else' i said. the tuktuk driver turned out to be really cool and waited for me and tried to take me to the new guest house. i saw another place on the way in that was also in the lonely planet. i asked him to take me there. they had OK rooms and when I answer the where are you from Q, he laughed a little and his eyes got wide. "Ohh! Sadam Hussein!" But I think he was just making a joke. he referred to the fan in my room as a "free helicopter" and laughed some more. I made a decision in my head that if anyone on the street in this town asked where I was from, I would say canada.
I unpacked and put on some other clothes and checked out the squat toilet. Again, no paper here. There is a garden hose thing with a nozel attached that you can squirt your bum with. After that is just air-dry, baby. You also have to use a bowl to scoop water from a large pail and dump it into the toilet to get it to 'flush'. I went out to the lobby and said hello to a group of three japanese travelers, young guys, but they didnt speak much english. im on my own again, i thought. i started walking and found an interesting temple ruin and then came into what i think is downtown where they have this internet gaming center. its huge for this size city. 30 PCs at least. all thai kids playing counterstrike and Ragnarok. I paid for just one night. not sure if I'll stay longer than that.
