i just saw Tears of the Sun. Its a very fine movie about our armed forces, diplomacy, euthenasia, evil regimes, and Africa. There is or will shortly be a glut of war movies. There was a preview for one before this movie. Tears of the Sun had a decent story, it was very believably done, and it clearly showed some of the horror of war. I think this is a good time for war movies, because congresspeople will probably watch at least one. I think the movies can remind us of the reality of suffering that is just not possible by thinking about it logically. The most important message i got out of the movie is that once you are in a war, you cant think logically anymore. entering a war for good reasons may force us to make devastitaing decisions later on. There can still be good reasons for armed conflict, but we have to try to think more than one step ahead.
Im about 3/4th of the way through The Future of Ideas, by Lawrence Lessig. Its an excellent book once I got past all the 'history of the internet stuff.' it makes some really great points about monopolies in america and the history of the telecommunication and cable networks.
I woke up with a cough this morning. I felt ok for most of the day but now my body is achey and sore. I really hope this passes quickly so i can be well during my long flight to bangkok.
