The classified ads are a joke, scarry even. The computer ads used to be 4 or 5 columns on a weekday. Today and the last time I looked there were 4 ads. 4 ads! None of which im remotely qualified for. the media loves to talk about the depressed state of the economy. I feel like im living through an economic depression not seen since the great depression.
so what did the people in the 20s do? Ive often marveled at the simple beauty of the stone bridges on the historic columbia river highway from portland to multnomah falls. They were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Hundreds of thousands of men (i think it was all men) put to work planting trees and building roads in an enormous government project to reduce unemployment.
If I were to create a CCC, Id work on demolishing and redesigning the suburbs to something more community oriented. An emphasis on community space, where the pedestrian and cyclist are king and automobile roads feed the back of houses, not the front, and the road routes are routed around neighborhoods instead of through them. There would be a zillion more little shops to eleminate the need of transporting food 2 miles or more.
What if you looked out your house and the grass was a continous patch from your house, across the strip that used to be ashfault but is now a dirt or pebble lane, and over to your neighbor's house. The only utility lines are Electrial, Fiber, Coax, which are bundled together, and come in underground via the water pipes.
